FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 27, 2020
PULASKI, Tenn. – Martin Methodist (now the University of TN Southern) is excited to announce that junior and senior accounting majors will join an MBA candidate as participants of the 2020 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
UTS (formerly MMC)’s VITA participants are all certified in the Volunteer Standards of Conduct, Intake Interviewing, and Basic Tax Preparation. They will prepare income tax returns for community members who are either elderly or have low to moderate incomes, as defined by the earned income tax credit threshold.
To prepare for their participation, these volunteers first studied taxes in the fall semester with the VITA program’s Link & Learn lessons, and all were required to take exams that certify them at a specific level. The majority of UTS (formerly MMC)’s participants are certified at the basic level, with two qualifying as advanced.
“It is an honor to have such an enthusiastic and dedicated group of students volunteering to provide tax services to our community through participation in the VITA program,” said Dr. Alice Burkins, Professor of Accounting. “I am thrilled for this opportunity for our majors as they help residents of our county.”
Recent UTS (formerly MMC) graduate and Martin Hall Administration Assistant Haley Kinder will set up appointments for February 1, February 15, March 21, and March 28 for anyone who wishes to have their tax returns prepared. Appointments will start at 8:30 AM and will continue up until the last appointment slot is filled each day, at 2:30 p.m. Kinder can be reached at hkinder@martinmethodist.edu.
