
Fine Arts at the University of Tennessee Southern DELIVERS
Part of the Victoria and Thomas Martin School of Arts and Humanities, the Fine Arts department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts, with concentrations in music, art, and drama, as well as minors in Art, Dramatic Arts, Graphic Design, and Music. Admission to the BA in Music requires a successful audition.
Our Program Out-Performs.
Choral
The choral program offers opportunities University of Tennessee Southern students to perform music from all genres and style periods. The UTS choral program offers two choral ensembles that are open to all students, regardless of major: Chamber Choir (audition required) and Concert Choir. You can also sign up for individual voice lessons to develop your singing voice even faster! The vocal major prepares students for multiple degree paths, including conducting, performing, and pedagogy.
Instrumental
Offering majors in piano, this program offers the skills and experiences to create well-rounded musicians. Students learn what it takes to become a professional pianist in the 21st century, with classes in theory, history, performance, and pedagogy.
Theatre
The Dramatic Arts prepares students for careers both on and off the stage, with classes focusing on acting, production, and entrepreneurship. All students can join the Drama Club or audition for the Theatre Productions, featuring annual events such as Shakespeare on the Green.
Design
Open to all students, the minors in Art and Graphic Design offer students experiences in traditional artistic disciplines like painting and ceramics to course in web design, photography, and animation.
Audition Requirements
- Successful admission to the University of Tennessee Southern.
- A completed Audition Request form.
- Voice: Two pieces in different languages. Pieces must be memorized. Accompanist provided for the audition.
- Piano: Scales and Arpeggios (major and minor, two octaves, in 5 keys of your choice); Two contrasting solos from the standard piano repertoire (examples include J.S. Bach Sinfonias and Prelude and Fugues, movements of sonatas by W.A. Mozart and L. Beethoven, preludes and etudes by F. Chopin, or 20th/21stC works of equivalent difficulty). Pieces must be memorized.

Fine Arts Faculty

Brendan Jacklin
Assistant Professor of Music (Piano)
Canadian pianist Brendan Jacklin is an active performer, teacher, lecturer, and new music advocate. A special interest of his involves performing interdisciplinary and multimedia music, performing works with electronics, video, poetry, and dance, and he has premiered dozens of new works for the piano. Brendan has presented at conferences across the USA, including topics on recording technology, performance practice, and pedagogy.
Brendan is also a co-founder of A Seat at the Piano, an initiative to create a more equitably representative body of piano works. He currently serves as a professor of music at University of Tennessee Southern, where he is also Director of the UT Southern Music Academy.
Brendan completed his D.M.A. at the University of Cincinnati, with cognates in piano pedagogy and multimedia music. He completed his M.Mus at Bowling Green State University, and his B.Mus at Brandon University with minors in cello performance and history. Previous teachers and mentors include Awadagin Pratt, Michelle Conda, Thomas Rosenkranz, Megumi Masaki, and Leanne Zacaharias.

Andrew Martin
Instructor of Music (Choral)
Andrew Martin, a choral conductor, clinician, and arranger, is in demand as a choral clinician and adjudicator and his arrangements are performed by choirs throughout the country. Martin currently serves as Director of Choral Activities at the University of Tennessee Southern in Pulaski, Tennessee after previously holding the same position at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Martin also was a graduate teaching assistant at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana where he conducted the University Choral Union and was the assistant conductor of the Ball State University Singers.
From 2006-2016, Martin served as the Director of Choral Activities at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. His concert choirs consistently earned Gold ratings, with distinction, in ISSMA Organizational and State Qualification events and his show choirs received numerous awards in competitions throughout Indiana. Andrew is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Choral Conducting from Ball State University and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Ball State and a Master’s degree in Music Technology from Indiana University, Purdue University, Indianapolis.
