Why Chemistry at UT Southern?

Welcome to the Chemistry program at UT Southern, where we’re dedicated to your success and growth as a scientist. Whether you aspire to pursue advanced studies in chemistry, aim for professional programs like medical or veterinary school, or dive straight into the workforce as a practicing chemist, we provide the resources and guidance you need to thrive. Our program will prepare you with a solid foundation in fundamental principles while nurturing your critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.

Depending on your interests, you may elect for a General Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Forensics concentration. No matter your choice, throughout your academic studies, you’ll engage in rigorous coursework and hands-on laboratory experiences. Our newly renovated labs boast state-of-the-art instrumentation, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and gas chromatography, ensuring you gain practical skills essential for real-world applications.

One of the highlights of our program is the opportunity for undergraduate research. Under the mentorship of our experienced faculty, you’ll conduct independent projects such as molecular modeling of human Dicer variants, development of 3D printed spectrometers, and synthesis of polymerizable imidazole. These exciting projects deepen your understanding and foster creativity and innovation in scientific inquiry.

As you progress through our program, you’ll also complete a Senior Capstone, participate in research, and hone your communication skills through oral and written reports—essential for professional success in any field.

A Word About Minors

A minor in Chemistry is possible. Or you could complement your Chemistry major with a minor in another field. Check out the Related Programs list and reach out to a program coordinator for more information.

A minor, which is typically eighteen credit hours, is a grouping of courses in a particular academic field of study designed to provide you with expanded knowledge and competency in an area outside your major.
