University of Tennessee Southern Receives Historic 600-Acre Gift from Dr. Bruce Wilson’s Estate

PULASKI, TN – January 25, 2024

In a momentous occasion for the University of Tennessee Southern, a generous gift of 600 acres has been bequeathed by the late Dr. Bruce Wilson, a respected cardiologist and native of Prospect, Tennessee. This gift, the largest in the history of the campus, was officially secured following a declaratory judgement by Judge Joe Townsend of the Shelby County Probate Court on January 10, 2024.

Dr. Wilson, who passed away in December of 2022, had approached UT Southern with the vision of using his farm for educational purposes while also recognizing the necessity of generating income to support the facility. His dream was to see the land used in a way that would enrich the educational experience at UT Southern, a vision that has now become a reality.

This transformative gift will continue to be utilized for its current farming purposes, leased to local farmers. The proceeds from these leases will flow into unrestricted funds, directly enhancing the student experience at UT Southern. This arrangement not only honors Dr. Wilson’s initial vision but also ensures a sustainable and impactful use of the land.

Interim Chancellor Linda C. Martin spoke of the significance of this gift: “The generosity of Dr. Wilson is a beacon of inspiration for our community. His foresight in using this gift to simultaneously advance education and support local agriculture aligns perfectly with our mission. The impact of this gift will resonate for generations, offering unparalleled opportunities for our students and faculty. It’s a visionary act that will help to shape the future of UT Southern in ways we are only beginning to imagine.”

Evan Beech, Vice Chancellor of Advancement at UT Southern, who was instrumental in stewarding this gift, shared his thoughts: “Navigating this journey has been a profound honor. Dr. Wilson’s vision and generosity have laid a foundation for a future filled with innovation and growth. This gift is not just about land; it’s about cultivating potential and nurturing the dreams of future generations.”

Dr. Wilson’s legacy will endure through this gift, leaving an indelible mark on the campus and the broader community. His commitment to education and his community will continue to inspire future generations of students and educators at UT Southern.

The University of Tennessee Southern extends heartfelt gratitude to the Wilson-Gilbert families and the estate’s representatives for their dedication to fulfilling his vision. This gift is a testament to Dr. Wilson’s vision and his lifelong commitment to education and community service.
