About the Event
An investiture is one of the oldest traditions in higher education—a formal ceremony that confers authority upon a university’s chief executive and marks a defining moment in the life of an institution. Rooted in centuries of academic heritage, the investiture symbolizes both continuity and renewal, honoring the university’s foundation while affirming its future direction.
The investiture of Dr. Melinda Arnold as Chancellor of the University of Tennessee Southern represents a significant milestone as the university continues to advance its mission, sharpen its academic focus, and strengthen its role as a regional engine for opportunity, workforce preparation, and community impact. This moment reflects both institutional momentum and a shared commitment to student success, innovation, and service to Southern Middle Tennessee.
The ceremony will include remarks from Chancellor Arnold, University of Tennessee System President Randy Boyd, and university and community leaders. Program highlights will feature traditional academic processional elements and the ceremonial presentation of the University Mace—symbols of authority, stewardship, and the responsibilities entrusted to the chancellor.
For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony will be livestreamed with closed captioning. Access information will be shared on this page prior to the event.
What Is an Investiture?
An investiture is a formal academic ceremony that marks the beginning of a chancellor’s service and affirms the responsibilities entrusted to the role. Longstanding across higher education, the tradition reflects continuity of leadership, institutional stewardship, and a shared commitment to the university’s mission.

The University Mace
The University Mace is a historic symbol of academic authority and institutional governance, carried during commencements, convocations, and chancellor investitures. Its origins trace back to medieval Europe, where the mace evolved from a ceremonial weapon into an emblem of civic and academic order.
The University of Tennessee Southern Mace features the seal of the institution, with three Greek columns symbolizing the campus gazebo—columns preserved after the 1971 fire that destroyed Tennessee Hall, a building central to the university’s history. Engraved with the university’s motto, Cognito, Opportunitas, Veritas (“Knowledge, Opportunity, Truth”), the mace reflects the enduring values upon which UT Southern was built.
During the investiture ceremony, the presentation of the mace signifies the formal conferral of authority and responsibility entrusted to the chancellor and underscores the continuity of leadership that sustains the university’s mission.
