Why Special Education at UT Southern?
Welcome to the Special Education program at UT Southern’s Grissom School of Education. We are dedicated to preparing compassionate educators who will make significant connections and positively affect the lives of students with diverse learning needs. Here, we believe in the power of education to foster inclusion, empower individuals, and create a more compassionate society.
In our Special Education program, you’ll receive comprehensive training to teach and support students in varying grade levels, with a licensure interventionist available for grades K-8 or 6-12. Our curriculum emphasizes evidence-based practices, equipping you with specialized teaching techniques, behavior management strategies, and effective collaboration skills with families and professionals. This ensures that you are well-prepared to meet the unique needs of every student and facilitate their academic and personal growth.
At UT Southern, we take pride in our small class sizes, allowing for personalized attention and mentorship from experienced faculty committed to your success. Our program boasts a 100% job placement rate upon graduation, highlighting the strong demand for qualified special education teachers in the field of education. Special education is a high-need field and the fastest-growing education major at UT Southern, offering excellent professional growth and development opportunities.
It’s important to know that licensure programs like this are professional programs that require you to apply and be granted admission into the program. You can learn more about these requirements in the UT Southern Course Catalog. Further, Tennessee teacher licensure includes a clinical practice component. This hands-on experience, which lasts fifteen weeks and involves two placements within a 50-mile radius of our campus, prepares you for the challenges and rewards of classroom leadership.
A Word About Minors
A minor in another field of study may be possible. A minor, which is typically eighteen credit hours, is a grouping of courses in a particular academic field of study designed to provide you with expanded knowledge and competency in an area outside your major. Reach out to a program coordinator for more information.
