UT Southern Campus Update and Appreciation: Response to January 31, 2024 Incident

Faculty and Staff,

First, we want to thank you all for your exemplary response to the events as they unfolded here at UT Southern yesterday, Wednesday, January 31, 2024. The trainings we participate in help to prepare our community for responses during incidents like this.

In the early afternoon, UT Southern was alerted to a potential external threat near our campus. Prioritizing the safety of our university community, the university immediately implemented a shelter-in-place directive in an abundance caution while the threat was assessed by the authorities. It’s important to note that while the campus alert system initiated active shooter protocols as a precaution, there were no shots fired and no firearms observed. State and local authorities conducted a comprehensive evaluation, ultimately confirming that there was no threat to the campus.

The necessary security measures, including restricted campus and building access, coincided with late-day classes. After the authorities declared the campus safe, the decision was made to cancel classes for the remainder of the day to minimize confusion and concern.

We recognize that such incidents can be unsettling. Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff is our highest concern. We are dedicated to maintaining a secure campus environment and will continue our close collaboration with law enforcement.

Our gratitude extends to the entire UT Southern community for their cooperation and understanding during this situation. We also commend the state and local authorities for their prompt and thorough response. Thank you to everyone involved for their efforts in ensuring a swift and safe resolution to the situation.
