Living on campus is one of the best parts of the college experience. Take a look around to find all the applications and info you need to be a resident on the UT Southern campus.

Residential Requirement

All new incoming full-time students under the age of 21 and enrolled in at least 12 hours of coursework each semester are required to live on campus or at home with a parent, legal guardian, sibling (over the age of 25), or a grandparent within 30 miles of campus.

Apply for Housing

All students must complete an application through the Office of Residential Life, either for on-campus housing or for off-campus residency. Whether you are a new or returning resident or a commuter student, click below to find the housing application for you.

Housing Selection Process

For Returning Students

Residents who have lived on campus at UT Southern previously may apply for housing and select their own residence via the Housing Selection Process:

  1. Apply Online
  2. Sign Room and Board Agreement
  3. Select Room

Step 1: Apply

  • Each resident completes their own application and can request to be grouped with up to 3 other residents. (You will need the full name, UT Southern email, and Student ID number for each roommate.)
  • To be grouped together, all residents must request one another in their applications.
  • Group numbers are assigned on (a) seniority, and (b) the order in which they are received.
    • Seniority is based on the majority of the residents in the group. For instance, if one senior and three juniors are in a group, the group’s rank is based on the majority: junior. If two seniors and two juniors are in a group, the entire group will get the higher rank: senior.
    • Order received is based on the timestamp of all applications in the group. For instance, if three of the four residents apply immediately when applications open, but the fourth resident does not apply for a few days, the entire group’s selection number will be based on that last application’s timestamp.
  • Residents may request a single room, or to be randomly placed by staff.

Step 2: Sign Agreement

Room and Board Agreements will be emailed with your housing assignments after selection. Residents must complete the financially-binding Room and Board Agreement to be able to participate in Room Selection. (Because this document is financially binding, residents should not sign if they are still unsure about their plans for the next year. This will, however, preclude the resident from participating in Housing Selection.)

Step 3: Room Selection

On a designated date (see below), groups will physically select their room for the upcoming year, in order of number. Only one student from each group must be present, but all are welcome. Students may designate (in writing) a proxy to select their room for them if no one in the group can be present.

  • Room Selection for Rising Seniors: Wednesday, March 26 at 5 p.m.
  • Room Selection for Rising Juniors: Thursday, March 27 at 5 p.m.
  • Room Selection for Rising Sophomores: Friday, March 28 at 5 p.m.

After Selection is complete, students who wish to move from residential halls to the Student Apartments or Oakwood Academic Excellence Apartments will be ranked using a combination of “first-come, first-served” and seniority. Students who have already signed a Room and Board Agreement may complete an online form to be added to the Waiting List.

For New Residents

Students applying to live at The University of Tennessee Southern for the first time should complete the New Student Application. Applications are open for 2024-2025.

New students must pay a $150 application fee (through the online application) and provide proof of meningitis immunizations (through MedProctor). No new students will be allowed to move into residential facilities without receipt of the application fee and proof of meningitis immunizations.

Getting Ready to Live on Campus

Room and roommate assignments for new students will go out in June. (We don’t begin assigning until June so that we can find you the perfect roommate!) You will also receive an assigned move-in time block for Move In Day!

Commuting and Living Off Campus

Students wishing to commute to campus, or live off campus, should complete the Off Campus Application to avoid charges.

Failure to accurately complete this application and provided any necessary supporting documents will result in the student being charged for on campus housing.

To determine if you are eligible to commute/live off campus, please review the Residential Requirements. If a student decides to commute or live off campus but does not meet the exceptions in the Residential Requirement, the student will be charged for on campus housing.

If a commuting student fails to complete the Off Campus Application, the student will be charged for on-campus housing.

Resident Assistants

Resident Assistants are the heart blood of on-campus life. They create programs, support students, and keep the halls running smoothly for residents.

RA Applications for 2024-25 are full for the 2024-2025 academic year

Summer (May-August)

Summer Resident Assistants keep our campus facilities running throughout the summer months. They oversee all check-in and check-out processes, respond to emergencies, and support summer residents as needed.

Housing Assignments

Residential Life prioritizes the best fit for a student in terms of roommates, conditions, etc. over specific locations, and we do not take requests to live in specific buildings outside of the Housing Selection Process.

Students can view their assignment, when available, by accessing the Housing Portal.

How to Access Your Housing Portal

  1. Go to Portal.
  2. Click Single Sign-On and sign in with your UT Southern email account.
  3. From the top menu, click Admin > My Housing, which will display your housing information for the term.
