On February 17, 2024, the University of Tennessee Southern Grissom School of Education proudly hosted the second annual Lynn McKee Erwin Children’s Literature Conference. This event was a remarkable success, celebrating children’s literacy and honoring educators from the past, present, and future. The university sincerely thanks the distinguished authors and presenters for sharing their expertise and insights with the attendees.
The conference welcomed 175 participants who had the unique opportunity to engage directly with five New York Times Best-Selling authors, a senior editor from Sleeping Bear Press, and a dedicated literacy advocate and former director of America Reads and Reading is Fundamental. Each educator departed with 13 nationally recognized, author-signed picture books and a selection of UT-branded merchandise for their classrooms. Authors Don Tate, Devin Scillian, Cynthia Leitich Smith, Frank Murphy, and George Ella Lyon led inspiring sessions on storytelling. Sarah Rockett, a senior editor, discussed the journey of writing and publishing children’s books and motivated teachers to pursue their creative ideas. Carol Hampton Rasco, former president and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental, addressed the importance of literacy and disability rights, urging educators to champion their students’ needs.
The sense of community and the spirit of celebration were highlighted by the conference’s founder, Dr. Ronnie Erwin. He established the event in loving memory of his late wife, Mrs. Lynn McKee Erwin, as a tribute to her passionate commitment to education and her remarkable kindness. Dr. Erwin’s devotion to his wife’s memory was evident throughout the conference, making it a fitting homage to her life and work.
UT Southern takes great pride in hosting this pivotal event and expresses gratitude to everyone involved in making the conference a success, including Dr. Ronnie Erwin, the Grissom School of Education, the authors, speakers, and attendees.
