At The University of Tennessee Southern, we want to embrace the community of Giles County. We appreciate the support we receive and would like to give back! We offer cultural activities such as the Della Clayton Lee events, activities for children in the summer, a local movie theater, a clinic, and a great health club facility which includes a cardio room, a pool, a weight room, and an indoor walking track. So come by and see what UT Southern has to offer!
Community Service Opportunities
Check all the community service options on and around campus!
Alternative Fall and Spring Break Trips
Hosted both in the Fall and Spring semesters, the Alternative Break Trips allow students, faculty, and staff to travel across the U.S. and assist with disaster recovery efforts or volunteer with under-served communities.
Boo-Out and Visit with Santa
All community members are welcome to join us at the Johnston Center for free holiday games, activities, and fun. Dates and times will be announced for Boo-Out and the annual visit with Santa.
Earth Week
The Biology Department helps educate the campus about the importance of sustainability and conservation. Last year, students led a Pleasant Run Creek cleanup project in which over 500 lbs. of trash was collected! This year’s event will be held during the third week of April.
Free Dental Day
Students, faculty, staff, and community members can volunteer for this annual Pulaski First United Methodist Church event! Volunteers are needed for hospitality and post-op care.
Spring Service Day
UT Southern hosts a campus-wide service event in late April each year. Join us for Spud Day, hosted in partnership with the Society of St. Andrew, where we will bag roughly eight thousand pounds of potatoes dropped on the campus green that will be provided to families throughout Giles County and Nashville, TN.
Arts and Music
Learn about all the different ways that UT Southern is involved with bringing our community opportunities to participate in arts, cinema, and music.
Art Classes
While a Visual Arts Major is not presently offered, students enjoy a variety of art courses, such as Ceramics, Painting, Drawing, 2- & 3-dimensional Design, Photography, and Computer Arts. These courses are open to the public, home-schooled, and public High School students seeking dual enrollment.
Barton Art Gallery
The Gault Fine Arts Building and Barton Art Gallery were opened in the Fall of 2009 upon completing the restoration of the old gymnasium on the campus of UT Southern. Since then, the Barton Gallery has hosted many exciting shows, such as the NASA Collection of Space Art; We Shall not be Moved – a civil rights exhibit from the Tennessee State Museum; and a show from the Smithsonian Institution, entitled: Indivisibles, which addresses the connections between Native Americans and African Americans. We have also shown local artists’ work and that of various artists from around the globe. Gallery Hours: 10 am to 5 pm on weekdays (closed during school breaks.)
We’ll Visit You!
We are excited to send UT Southern representatives to you as a part of our outreach initiative. We wish to strengthen working relationships with our community. We want to share the many opportunities we have to offer.
We are committed to raising the quality of life throughout the region. We are eager to help the countless budding leaders within our rural communities grow in spirit and knowledge and discover their calling.
If you are interested in having a UT Southern representative visit your community, school, business, or organization, please contact us.
