Why English at UT Southern?

An English degree unlocks a world of possibilities. Whether your passion lies in crafting eloquent prose, examining complex ideas, or inspiring minds through teaching, our English program will cultivate a love for language and critical thinking. With an emphasis on clear communication, as well as the the analysis and interpretation of texts, this is an adaptable and versatile degree.

The UT Southern English program, within the Victoria and Thomas Martin School of Arts and Humanities, offers several concentrations suited to different interests and career goals. You can choose from four distinct pathways: the Traditional Literature concentration, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL), Writing and Language, and Licensure. Each concentration is crafted to empower you with the skills necessary to excel in your chosen field while nurturing a deep appreciation for the written word.

The Traditional Literature concentration is perfect for those looking to continue their education in graduate studies, including English, History, and Law. It emphasizes critical thinking, written argumentation, and understanding culture and history—invaluable skills in any advanced academic pursuit.

For students passionate about teaching, the TESOL concentration offers a unique opportunity to work with diverse learners. Whether you dream of teaching abroad or supporting second language learners here in the U.S., this concentration equips you with the tools necessary to foster language development in various contexts.

If you’re eager to dive directly into the workforce, the Writing and Language concentration prepares you for careers as a professional, technical, or creative writer. Here, you’ll hone your craft and develop the necessary skills to thrive in the competitive and varied writing field.

Finally, our Licensure concentration is designed for those who wish to teach in public education, with programs tailored for both traditional students and those already working in schools. This pathway covers the essentials of English and emphasizes the pedagogical skills necessary to inspire young learners.

A Word About Minors

A minor, which is typically eighteen credit hours, is a grouping of courses in a particular academic field of study designed to provide you with expanded knowledge and competency in an area outside your major.
